Demi Lovato has been a through a lot in the last couple of years but has recently really started to find her way. Now Lovato will take the stage at Mohegan Sun Arena June 30 for one of the first few shows of her summer tour.
Lovato made media headlines in the fall of 2010 when she dropped out as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers Live in Concert World Tour to enter a treatment facility to deal with physical and emotional issues. She spent the next several months exploring and treating those issues, and even followed her time in rehab with an extended departure from the limelight.
When she was finally ready to talk about her experience, Lovato was extremely honest with the media and her fans. She talked openly with “Good Morning America” and “20/20” about her battle with bulimia and cutting, admitted to self-medicating with drugs and alcohol and even revealed to People magazine she had had a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed as bipolar while in treatment.
Lovato continues to raise awareness for these issues that many teens suffer from and this past spring released her MTV documentary special “Stay Strong” as another outlet to get her message across. In the documentary, Lovato opens up about her eating disorders, battling through it and getting back to touring.
And her music has definitely been a big part of what helped Lovato get through it all. In fact, her first big hit after finishing treatment was the emotionally charged ballad “Skyscraper.” Originally recorded before her stint in rehab, “Skyscraper” is about the end of the world where, among the ruins, one skyscraper manages to stand tall. Lovato said she broke down in tears when she first recorded the song, but was so pleased with her emotional recording she kept her pre-rehab vocals for the track that found its way on her post-rehab album, “Unbroken.”
The song was praised by critics and inspired many while also helping her peak at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Her follow up single, “Give Your Heart a Break,” is doing some chart climbing of its own, currently sitting at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
And if her chart and album success wasn’t enough, Lovato got huge career news this past May when she signed on to be a judge and mentor on the second season of “The X Factor” alongside Simon Cowell, LA Reid and Britney Spears.
So, with her past struggles seemingly overcome, Lovato is putting her best foot forward these days. With a new album in the works, her current album secure on the charts and massive TV exposure headed her way this fall, everything seems to be coming up roses for her. And with her Summer Tour 2012 now underway, June 30 is the perfect time to see Lovato live at Mohegan Sun Arena.
