One Direction have restored Simon Cowell's faith in The X Factor.
The music mogul has reportedly admitted he considered axing the talent programme - but 1D's popularity around the world convinced him otherwise.
'I thought, "If we don't find real stars, it's a waste of everyone's time",' Simon, 52, tells the Daily Star.
'They're No 1 in 30 countries. That's when you realise it's really worth making this show.'
The X Factor was beaten by rival Strictly Come Dancing in the ratings last year and was criticised for its dull judging panel.
One Direction finished 3rd in the previous series but have gone on to find huge success.
They became the first ever British group to go straight to No 1 in America with their debut album in March.
'I couldn't be happier for @onedirection, it is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world,' Tweeted Simon.
