Demi Lovato: It’s ‘hard’ for me to ask for help when I feel myself ‘slipping back into old patterns’

Demi Lovato has made a successful comeback after her very public 2010 breakdown – but the journey hasn’t been quite easy for the former Disney starlet.

Though she sought professional treatment for her multiple issues, the newest member on the “The X Factor” judging panel tells the July issue of Cosmopolitan that every day comes with a new challenge.

“It’s a daily thing; you don’t get time off from it,” Lovato tells the magazine. “And if I feel myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own.”

It wasn’t until the 19-year-old star underwent therapy for anorexia, bulimia and cutting that she learned she also had bipolar disorder.

“I felt relieved when I found out,” Lovato says of the diagnosis. “Like I’m not completely crazy; there’s a medical reason for all of it.”

Moving forward, the “Skyscraper” songstress says she already has an idea of where her personal life should be headed.

“I want to be married with kids in 10 years,” she tells Cosmo.

Until then, Lovato is keeping an open mind on the men she dates until she finds Mr. Right.

“I don’t have many deal breakers. I’ve done so much in my life, it doesn’t feel right to judge other people,” she says, before adding: “Oh, I know one quality I won’t tolerate. I would never be with a guy who is controlling.”
