Liam and Louis copy the original '60s boyband as they hit the beach

They've already recreated moments of Beatlemania while touring the U.S. and now that One Direction are Down Under, they're continuing that trend.

In scenes very similar to those seen in The Monkees opening credits Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson changed into their wetsuits and hit Manly Beach in Sydney yesterday.

The two singers were spotted tackling the waves with their surfboards as they took a break from their hectic schedule.

Like One Direction, The Monkees were an American pop rock group created in 1966 by Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968.

They were a musical act in the TV show and it made stars of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, and British heartthrob Davy Jones.

Wearing black all-in-one wetsuits, the boys couldn't stop smiling as they took to their surfboards and basked in the sunshine.

Even as they rode the waves, Louis couldn't help but strike a pose in the water, while Liam later tweeted: 'me and louis just went surfing... louis was up first and for a long 1 like 30 FEET!!!!!! OMG then i stood up un two nice waves woohoo :)'

The brunette stars appeared to be taking their hobby very seriously as they practised their techniques before venturing into the sea.

However, their three band mates Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik were nowhere to be seen as they frolicked in the sea.

Perhaps the three singers were worried that they would not have been able to go unnoticed at the public beach following the hysterical crowds they were faced with in Sydney the day before.

The boy band were making a guest appearance on Sunrise on the Seven television network and were met by hundreds of fans who were converged on the city's central Martin Place plaza for front-row positions outside the windows of the studio - just like hardcore Beatles fans used to.

Devoted fans have followed their every movement, tailing their black security vans across Sydney for press engagements in the hope of catching a glimpse of their idols, aged between 18 and 21.

The boys have been extremely busy ever since they touched down in OZ and yesterday made an appearance on the Kyle and Jackie O radio show.

But it certainly wasn't your standard radio interview as the boys had to answer their questions after inhaling helium from balloons.

When asked by Jackie who would he have play him in a movie about his life, Liam took a huge intake of helium and answered: 'I like to do a bit of weight training so I'd say someone like Taylor Lautner.'

Zayn was then asked if it was true that he never had a passport until recently, to which he replied: 'Yeah it's true, I did not have a passport before One Direction.

The fivesome are clearly having a great time on their travels and seemed to enjoy the helium a little too much.

Their previous arrivals in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, have seen hundreds of fans waiting for hours and even led to 14 teenagers being hospitalised in Canada after camping out overnight in freezing 14f (-10c) temperatures.

The band are set to perform at Australia's Logie television awards later this week, with organisers admitting they are 'expecting the very worst' from excitable fans.
