Pop idol Taylor Swift has accepted the offer of a date from Kevin McGuire, a Stratford teenager who's battling cancer. But the singer says she can't attend McGuire's prom so she's invited him to a country-music awards show instead.
"Kevin, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom," Swift said in a message posted to her Facebook page this afternoon. "But I was wondering, the ACM (Academy of Country Music) Awards are coming up. Would you be my date? Love, Taylor."
McGuire, an 18-year-old senior at Sterling High School in Somerdale, has attracted tens of thousands of Internet supporters in his bid to bring Swift to the June 1 prom. The country-music ceremony is to be held April 1 in Las Vegas.
McGuire didn't need to check his calendar to give an answer.
"Obviously I said yes," said McGuire, who's currently being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The country-music event "is a lot better than the senior prom."
At the same time, he acknowledged, "I'm sick and I'm not sure if I'm able to."
