On her 19th birthday, she shocked her fans when she confessed that she was a 'stoner' and a 'pot head' that smokes 'too much weed'.
But Miley Cyrus may be more interested in its medicinal properties after she was snapped leaving a medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles.
The teen star was seen with a female friend leaving a building that had Theraputic Health Care written on its window.
Showing off her new bobbed hairdo, she linked arms with her pal as the two girls left and headed to their car.
Wearing a Pat Bentar T-shirt, denim hotpants and aviator sunglasses, Miley looked every inch the pop star as she sipped from a soft drink bottle.
But eyebrows were raised over her visit to the dispensary particularly after comments she made on her 19th birthday last November.
As she was presented with a Bob Marley birthday cake, she took to the microphone and was caught on camera as she said: 'You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake.
'You know you smoke way too much f***ing weed!'
Her spokesperson insisted Miley was joking and said: 'It's all been taken out of context. The cake was a joke and Miley's response was intended to be sarcastic.'
In 2010, Miley was captured on camera smoking out of a bong which she denied at the time was marijuana and instead claimed that she was smoking the legal hallucinogen, salvia.
However, she didn't say she was joking after her comments on her birthday although her friend Kelly Osbourne, who threw the bash did, as well as Miley's boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.
He said: 'She's in a room full of her best friends and you have one person who comes in there and videos it. The poor girl can't have one night where she can feel safe in her own world. It's ridiculous.'
And Kelly took to her Twitter page after the birthday party and got very defensive over her friend and said: 'Let me make something very clear after @MileyCyrus salvia incident we started calling her Bob Miley as a JOKE! The cake was also A JOKE,' she wrote.
'It makes me sick that @Miley Cyrus so called 'friends' would sell her out and lead people 2 believe she is someone that she is not!
'U guys if @MileyCyrus is not recording/filming/touring she is works everyday how could she possible do all that if she was a stoner! #think.' (sic).
More than 400 chemicals are found in the cannabis plant, including cannabidiolic acid, an antibiotic with similar properties to penicillin.
Medical cannabis is illegal in most countries but a number of governments, including the U.S. allow treatment with one or more specific low doses of synthetic cannabinoids for one or more disorders including nausea, insomnia, headaches and can also benefit patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.
These dispensaries are quite common in California, especially along Venice Beach.
