Not long before bidding was to end, the car signed by Justin Bieber and put up for a charity auction at last got a reasonable bid on Friday. The car was sold for $40,000, with the money going to renovate a skateboard park in his Canadian hometown.
Bieber signed the fire engine red 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0 Turbo on the dashboard and sun visor while home in Stratford, Canada, over Christmas. He was asked to do so by the owner of Stratford Hyundai, Frank Sandola, who thought it would be a good promotion and who said he wanted to contribute to a good cause.
Bieber got to choose the charity and he'd heard some kids were looking to raise funds to fix up a dilapidated skateboard park. Sandola has sold a car to the singer's grandmother and from there the idea to have him help out was hatched. The car's retail price was $35,000 and it sat on eBay with a bid of $30,000 until the winning bid came in shortly before the auction closed.
Bieber has auctioned off other items for good causes, including a pair of his old running shoes, a lock of hair and last November he auctioned off his pet boa constrictor named Johnson. The money from the sale of Johnson went to 'Pencils for Promise', a charity which builds school and provides school supplies around the world.
Sandola said he was impressed by Bieber when the pop superstar came by to sign the car. "He spent about a half-hour in here, took his pictures and signed the car," Sandola said at the time. "I have to say, he was a very nice kid.”
