Selena Gomez, Beyonce and More Embrace Interesting Trend: The Mullet?

Selena Gomez and other bold-named, style-forward stars the likes of Beyonce, Katy Perry have embraced an interesting if not pretty sultry trend. But it has nothing to do with their enviable locks! Rather it is all about the mullet -- the mullet dress, that is.

Just like the rather unfortunate haircut for which it is named, the fashionable frock is short in the front, allowing stars to show off their gams, and long in the back, often with a bit of a train. But unlike the 'do, mullet gowns can be plenty sexy, although they do come equipped with a bit of controversy. There have been plenty of "Fashion Police" moments involving the oft debated trend.

Nevertheless, Selena Gomez is one celeb who rocked the contentious look very well. She started 2011 off with a bang, wearing a diaphanous, patterned strapless confection that showed off her legs to the People's Choice Awards in January. But her best mullet moment came in August with the black Julien Macdonald she selected for the 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre. Boyfriend Justin Bieber certainly had to have liked this one! Quite edgy and a bit gothic with seductive and see-through lace detail, the dramatic gown was statement-making and stunning.

More drama came with Beyonce, particularly a pre-baby bump, sparkling and sequined Balmain which she wore to a movie première. Fellow songstress Katy Perry has also explored the trend, specifically with a colorful, figure-hugging Manish Arora piece that was a bit less successful and significantly less leggy with only a slight peek-a-boo front.

Of course when talking about the mullet dress, one cannot leave off from the list Miley Cyrus whose father, Billy Ray Cyrus, worked the hair long before his daughter ever stepped foot into a high-low gown. She once wore a super-short in the front DSquared2 dress to VH1 Divas --with fishnets, no less. Her look probably could have used some work.

As Celebuzz and many other commentators have said, the mullet dress is "party in the front, business in the back." Selena Gomez definitely was no party pooper in 2011, keeping the trend in check. But some of her fellow stars? Not so much. Check out the site's photo gallery for more fashion moments worth celebrating and some not so much.
