The popstar brought in 2012 by appearing on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve live in Times Square and played the classic 1970 song on piano. Halfway through the performance, he was joined by legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.

Before covering the track, Bieber told the crowd: "New York City! I'm so happy to be here to bring in this New Year with you guys. New York, with all you've been through, your spirit's never been broken. We all do the best we can each year... And what will be, will be."

The 17-year-old tweeted after the show that he was "honoured" to have performed with Santana.

Bieber recently returned to the US after spending Christmas in his hometown of Stratford, Ontario, Canada, where he performed a benefit for the Children's Wish Foundation.

He also bought his childhood friend Ryan Butler a white Mustang convertible for Christmas.
