Adele Beats Justin Bieber's 2011 Album Sales

Justin Bieber may be the most famous pop superstar on the planet, but when it comes to earning hard cash, Adele has him beat. JB's 2011 music sales totalled 3,393,000 units. Adele sold 6,744,000 units. What happened? Did millions of beliebers suddenly lose their allowances? Did JB's millions of Twitter followers' parents cancel their credit cards? Or did the Biebs lose out because he was too busy romancing Selena Gomez?

According to Nielsen Soundscan and Billboard's year-end report, the number 1 and number 2 top-selling artists of 2011 were Adele and Justin Bieber--respectively. And as shown by the figures above, Adele's "numbers crushed the other by almost double!"

Of course, the nagging question that remains is still: Why? Was Justin's inability to infect the public with a case of Bieber fever serious enough to make them run out and buy up a few million more musical units really the result of his preoccupation with Selena Gomez? Did he fail to place number 1 on the Nielsen Soundscan and Billboard's reports because he was "all busy being in love and stuff?" Possibly. But probably not. It's more likely that because of his romance with Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber just sounded too darned happy. His music was too upbeat and optimistic. And, as the folks at E! Online put it: "when it came to hearing about those depressing moments of dealing with that hollow feeling in your chest, Adele was our girl." Thanks to Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber hasn't felt that "depressing...hollow feeling" for over a year now.

Oh well, congratulations, Adele. As for you, JB, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but you still win just the same.
