Demi Lovato
Born: August 20, 1992
Famous since: 2007
Connections: Daughter of a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader; sister to child star Madison de la Garza, BFF to Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, and Miley Cyrus; ex-girlfriend of pop star Joe Jonas; romantically linked to noted teen icon-romancer Wilmer Valderrama.
Known for: Demi is best known for her work in Disney fare, from the television movies Camp Rock and The Princess Protection Program to her series Sonny with a Chance. Lovato has also released three albums, including her 2011 effort Unbroken, which debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. There was also this whole rehab thing...
Talent quotient: Lovato has one of the most remarkable voices of the ex-Disney crew. As songwriter Ryan Tedder gushed to E! Online, "Demi blew me out of the water vocally! I had no idea how good her voice is. She's one of the best singers I've ever worked with. Literally, that good... I mean, she's a Kelly Clarkson-level vocalist. And Kelly has a set of pipes."
Lovato has been entirely focused on her singing career since her series Sonny with a Chance ended in 2010, so it's unclear whether she's capable of acting in more grown-up fare.
Scandal quotient: Demi checked into rehab in November 2010 after she punched one of her backup singers in the face. While she's never admitted to partying too hard (these days she's often spotted in a shirt that reads, "The Only Coke I Do Is Diet"), she has been forthcoming about her struggle with an eating disorder and cutting. Lovato's policy of openness and honesty has worked in her favor—everyone loves a comeback queen.
Projects in 2012: Beyond a hosting gig for MTV on New Year's Eve, the coming year looks wide open for Lovato. We're optimistic that she'll remain committed to her own health and happiness, but aren't quite sure what that entails.
Our Call: Despite arguably being the most talented among her colleagues, Demi has a bit of an uphill battle ahead of her: She hasn't yet found adult material that plays to her strengths. Critics were impressed by her vocal stylings on her single "Skyscraper," but noted that much of her most recent album was uptempo tween-centric filler. Once Lovato refines her palette, she could do some serious damage. In a good way, we mean.
