'Dunkirk' Opens Big at Weekend Box Office, 'Valerian' Has Slow Start

Dunkirk, starring Tom Hardy, Fionn Whitehead, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, Jack Lowden, Tom Glynn-Carney, and more, opened with $50.5 million at the box office this weekend!

The movie was open in just 3,720 locations, and the Christopher Nolan movie reportedly had a budget of under $100 million.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with this incredible result on this brilliant film,” Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein said in a statement (via Variety). “In a summer that has had a lot of disappointments, this movie way over-achieved.”

Jada Pinkett Smith‘s Girls Trip came in at number two with $30.3 million earned in its opening weekend.

Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in an addition $22.0 million after it opened in early July. The film has grossed $251,711,581.

Rounding out the top five are War for the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $20.0 million and Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne‘s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which brought in only $17.0 million in its opening weekend.
